01

A quiet corner on the east side of Las Terrenas

Residence Las Dos Palmas sits on Calle España in the Punta Popy area, the east end of Las Terrenas. Playa de La Iglesia is a 3-minute walk and Punta Popy Beach, the kitesurfers' favorite, is 5 minutes away; downtown and the Fishermen's Village are just over a kilometer (under a mile) away.

It isn't a traditional hotel: it's five separate cottages, each with its own kitchen, sharing a pool, a garden and a gazebo with tables. It suits couples who want to feel at home for a few days or a few weeks. It has a 4.7 on Google from 79 reviews, and guests keep mentioning the same three things: the calm, the short walk to the beach and the friendly service.

Every winter thousands of humpback whales come to Samaná Bay to mate and give birth. Whale-watching boats leave from the port of Samaná (24.4 km) and follow distance rules so the whales aren't disturbed.

Playa Rincón, on a day trip

Playa Rincón, on a day trip

When to go to Las Terrenas

Average high temperature and rainfall on the Samaná Peninsula, month by month (approximate values).

High season, drier (Dec–Apr) Hot (May–Jul) Rain and hurricanes (Aug–Nov) · mm

  • ☀️ December to April is high season: more sunshine and more bearable heat. The town fills up at Christmas, New Year's, Carnival (February) and Easter, so book early.
  • 🐋 From January 15 to the end of March, humpback whales gather in Samaná Bay. Whale-watching boats fill up on weekends.
  • 🌡️ May to July is hotter (31–32 °C) and quieter; showers are usually short.
